§ 55. Control of contagious, infectious diseases.

  • That they may take such measures as they may deem effectual to prevent the entrance into the city or the spreading therein of any contagious or infectious diseases; may stop, detain and examine for that purpose every person coming from places believed to be infected with such disease; may establish and regulate hospitals within the city or within three (3) miles thereof; may cause any person in the city suspected to be infected with such disease and whose stay may endanger its health to be removed to the hospital if the city have one; if not, where the council may direct; may remove from the city or destroy any furniture or other article which may be suspected of being tainted or infected with contagious or infectious diseases, or of which there shall be reasonable cause to apprehend that they may pass into such a state as to generate and propagate disease; may abate by any reasonable means all nuisances which may be injurious to the public health. That if any person shall attempt by force or by threat of violence to prevent the removal to the hospital or place selected by the city council aforesaid, of any person ordered to be conveyed thither, the person so offending shall be fined as provided by state law.
