§ 4. Wards of city.

  • The City of Shelby shall be divided into six (6) wards as follows, and to be known as follows, to wit:

    Ward 1. Begin at a point in the intersection of Marion Street and DeKalb Street and continue north to the center of Sumter Street. Thence east on Sumter to the center of Carolina Avenue. Thence with the centerline of Carolina Avenue to the centerline of Buffalo Street. Thence with the centerline of Buffalo Street in a northeast direction to the centerline of Fallston Road. Thence with the centerline of Fallston Road north to the City Limit line. Thence following the City Limit line as it meanders in a southeast direction to a point in the centerline of N.C. 150, the Cherryville Highway. Thence following the centerline of Cherryville Highway in a southwest direction to the centerline of Marion Street. Thence with the centerline of Marion Street in a West direction to the centerline of Peach Street. Thence with the centerline of Peach Street in a southwest direction to the centerline of Forest Hill Drive. Thence with the centerline of Forest Hill Drive in a west direction to a point over a branch of the Hickory Creek. Thence following the creek in a south direction to an intersection with a western branch of Hickory Creek just north of Gidney Street. Thence following the west branch in a north direction to the centerline of Graham Street. Thence with the centerline of Graham Street in a west direction to the centerline of Patton Drive. Thence with the centerline of Patton Drive in a north direction to the centerline of Marion Street. Thence with the centerline of Marion Street in a west direction to the point of beginning.

    Ward 2. Begin at a point in the centerline of U.S. 74 directly over Hickory Creek and continues north with the centerline of Hickory Creek as it meanders to a point in the centerline of Forest Hill Drive. Thence with the centerline of Forest Hill Drive in an east direction to the centerline of Peach Street. Thence with the centerline of Peach Street in a north direction to the centerline of Marion Street. Thence with the centerline of Marion Street in an east direction to the intersection with Cherryville Road. Thence with the centerline of Cherryville Road in a north direction to the northernmost point where the City Limit line touches Cherryville Road. Thence leaving Cherryville Road and following the City Limit line as it meanders in a southeast direction. Thence continuing with the City Limit line as it crosses U.S. 74 and continues in a west direction to a point in the centerline of Earl Road. Thence following the centerline of Earl Road in a northwest direction to a point directly over Hickory Creek. Thence continuing with the centerline of Hickory Creek in a north direction to the place of beginning. Also, included in this Ward is the satellite annexation of Satterfield Restaurant on the east side of Buffalo Creek.

    Ward 3. Begin at a point in the intersection of Morgan Street and U.S. 74 and continuing with the centerline of Morgan Street in a north direction to the intersection with Graham Street. Thence with the centerline of Graham Street in an east direction to a point directly over the west branch of Hickory Creek. Thence with the centerline of the west branch of Hickory Creek as it meanders in a southerly direction to a point just north of Gidney Street where the east branch of Hickory Creek merges. Thence continuing with the centerline of Hickory Creek in a south direction crossing Gidney Street and U.S. 74 to a point in the centerline of Earl Road directly over Hickory Creek. Thence with the centerline of Earl Road in a southeast direction to the City Limit line. Thence following the City Limit line as it meanders in a southwest direction to a point in the centerline of Charles Road and James Love School Road intersection. Thence with the centerline of James Love School Road in an east direction to the centerline of Knox Street. Thence with the centerline of Knox Street in a north direction to the centerline of Surrey Drive. Thence with the centerline of Surrey Drive to Farm Road. Thence continuing with the centerline of Farm Road in an east direction to the centerline of LaFayette Street. Thence with the centerline of LaFayette Street in a north direction to a point directly over the centerline of U.S. 74. Thence with the centerline of U.S. 74 in a west direction to the place of beginning. Also included in this ward are the satellite annexations including the Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport and the City of Shelby Waste Treatment Plant.

    Ward 4. Begin at a point in the centerline of Morgan Street and U.S. 74 and continuing with the centerline of U.S. 74 in a west direction to the intersection with Polkville Road. Thence with the centerline of Polkville Road in a north direction to a point where the City Limit line crosses Polkville Road. Thence following the City Limit line as it meanders in a northeast direction to its intersection with Metcalf Road. Thence with the centerline of Metcalf Road in a south direction to LaFayette Street. Thence with the centerline of LaFayette Street in a south direction to Morgan Street. Thence with the centerline of Morgan Street in a south direction to the point of beginning.

    Ward 5. Begin at a point in the center of LaFayette Street directly over the centerline of U.S. 74 and continuing with the centerline of LaFayette Street in a south direction to the intersection with Farm Road. Thence with the centerline of Farm Road in a west direction to the intersection with Surrey Drive. Thence with the centerline of Surrey Drive in a west direction to the intersection with Knox Street. Thence with the centerline of Knox Street in a south direction to the intersection of James Love School Road. Thence with the centerline of James Love School Road in a west direction to a point in the City Limit line in Charles Road. Thence following the City Limit line as it meanders in a northwest direction crossing U.S. 74 and continuing until it intersects with Polkville Road. Thence with the centerline of Polkville Road in a south direction to the intersection of U.S. 74. Thence with the centerline of U.S. 74 in an east direction to the point of beginning. Also included in this ward are three satellite annexations. One is the property at the northeast intersection of Poplar Springs Church Road and Old Boiling Springs Road, the second one is the convenience store at the intersection of Plato Lee Road and U.S. 74, and the last one is Pebble Creek Subdivision on Old Boiling Springs Road.

    Ward 6. Begin at a point in the centerline of Morgan Street and Graham Street and continuing with the centerline of Morgan Street in a north direction to a point in the centerline of LaFayette Street. Thence with the centerline of LaFayette Street in a north direction to Metcalf Road. Thence following the centerline of Metcalf Road in a north direction to a point where the City Limit line crosses Metcalf Road. Thence following the City Limit line as it meanders in an east direction to its intersection with Fallston Road. Thence with the centerline of Fallston Road in a south direction to Buffalo Street. Thence with the centerline of Buffalo Street in a southwest direction to its intersection with Carolina Avenue. Thence with the centerline of Carolina Avenue in a south direction to its intersection with Sumter Street. Thence with the centerline of Sumter Street in a Southwest direction to the centerline of DeKalb Street. Thence with the centerline of DeKalb Street in a south direction to Marion Street. Thence with the centerline of Marion Street in an east direction to the intersection with Patton Drive. Thence with the centerline of Patton Drive in a south direction to Graham Street. Thence with the centerline of Graham Street in a west direction to the point of beginning. Included in this ward is the satellite annexation of the property at the northeast intersection of Fallston Road and New Prospect Church Road. That property shown on tax map 6-61, block 1, lots 99 and 100 are not included in this description and are outside of the City Limits.

Editor's note

Although not specifically amending the Charter, Session Laws of 1961, chapter 416, section 1, increased the number of wards in the city from four to six. See also the amendment note to section 5. Several subsequent ordinances have superseded the boundary descriptions.
